A gas cloud fell from Mount Merapi which sprung back to life with by more than a dozen other powerful blasts and thousands of tremors on October 26, smothering houses, cattle and villagers in its path. Houses and trees were torched and dozen of bodies were found on Friday. The deaths around the village of Bronggang raised the toll to 122 by Friday afternoon, still higher than 1994's deaths caused by Indonesia's volatile volcano. In 1930, more than a dozen of villages were torched, leaving up to 1,300 dead. Over 150 injured people suffered from respiratory problems and broken bones.
Windshields of cars from 300 miles away were covered with dust rained from the towering plumes of ash. Bursts of hot clouds interrupted aid efforts. State volcanologist Gede Swantika said that 1,765 million cubic feet of volcanic material from eruption was "the biggest in at least a century". The Indonesian government announced an $11 million program to provide compensation for animals lost in the eruptions.
